Imagine a landscape of dirt, garbage, and violence.
Imagine growing up in a ramshackle house made of leftover iron sheets.
Imagine, when it rains, the dirt floor turns to mud and you sleep in a small river.
Imagine barely being able to find food for your mom – never mind find a way to go to school.
Imagine you make it into school, funded by a sponsor from a faraway land. You have hope. Then you graduate.
- You can’t afford university.
- No one will hire you as there’s not enough jobs to go around and you’re still not qualified.
- You end up back in the slums, searching for scrap metal for sale and wandering the garbage-filled dirt paths of town just hoping someone will give you manual labor.
- You wish there was something – anything – useful to occupy your time with.
You see your friends getting into drugs and falling into thievery and violence. Sometimes, it feels like that’s the only way to make it. If only someone would give you a chance to shine. . .
That’s how Joseph, Velma, Louise, and Rose (pictured below) and countless other youth in Ngong Hills, Kenya have grown up. They have big ideas hiding in their heads but no one to tell them to – no opportunity to shine. That’s about to change.
In July, 2017, we’re going to bring a group of young men and women from San Diego to Kenya who are similarly disadvantaged, growing up …
- in unloving homes (or no home at all).
- with drugs and gang violence as part of their every day life.
- in a school system that doesn’t think they’re worth teaching to.
They too have ideas in their head that they don’t believe are worth sharing with anyone.
These young men and women separated by an ocean, will come together to create an idea, fundraise for it, and implement it – with my (and my team’s support).
In this process, they will realize just what they’re capable of and will see one of their very own ideas become reality and change the lives of hundreds of people.
In order to make this happen, we need $87,000. That will cover a ONE MONTH trip to Kenya for 15 people (10 youth and 5 staff/volunteers):
- Round Trip Tickets from San Diego to Kenya for 15 people (10 youth and 5 staff/volunteers).
- Passport Fees for 10 youth (and for any volunteers that need it.
- Room & Board (breakfast/dinner included) for 1 month in Kenya for 15 people (10 youth and 5 staff/volunteers).
- Phones for all 15 people on the trip (it’s important we’ll be able to stay in contact while there.)
- Travel within the country for the entire month for all 15 of us.
- Meals for the entire month for all 15 of us (mostly for lunch).
- Miscellaneous, unexpected costs that come up.
- A cultural safari experience to expand their minds and give them a viewpoint into tribal cultures.
We’ll be documenting the trip with video and higher-tier investors will get their own copy of the documentary.
